Eventful, yet successful DWC debut for Nieminen!14-07-2010 - Making his debut in the iDWCRR championship, Jesse Nieminen came through the action-packed race at the Canadian circuit to earn a hard-fought second position and lay down a gauntlet as to his future potential in the series. However, the Scandinavian didn't come away from Mosport unscathed; following an incident with Illka Haapala which effectively ended the latter's race, Nieminen found himself in a war of words with the Finn and Team Redline's Ben Cornett.
Jesse after the race:
"So sorry Ilkka, the whole thing surprised me and I couldn't slow down enough.
I was a bit dissapointed with quali, right on my first warm-up lap my pc froze(happens ~once in a month with iRacing, gfx temps or something) and I had to restart and missed almost half of the session. I didn't manage better than p5 which was annoying as I knew from practise that I could get into the front row with a good lap.
In the start I was a bit too careful and lost a place to Ilkka. Then it was just about following the guys in front of me as overtaking is very difficult here. Luke and Richard went off infront of me and suddenly I realised I had a chance for p2 if everything went awesomely. I was following Shawn and Ilkka into the Moss corner as Shawn went a little bit deep in and I had to tap on the brakes a bit too much after the righthander crest while turning, to avoid Ilkka, and around I went. Luckily I could rejoin relatively quickly but was down at p8 or something. It also didn't help that I hadn't done a teststint longer than 10 laps, so the oversteer with worn-out tires really surprised me and I was struggling quite a bit until I realised to put more front arb in the car. After that the car felt much better and I could start pushing again.
I was initially going to pit around lap 25 but Ben was holding up Richard quite a lot and I was catching them around 1 second a lap. As I knew overtaking would be extremely hard I thought it probably wouldn't work if I just tried to follow them and pit at the same time So I went in on lap 20, refueled small and pushed like crazy on the following laps. It worked out and Richard rejoined right behind me after his stop.
On the 2nd stint I was pushing really hard to catch Shawn and Ilkka who were p2 and p3, Shawn went off at t3 and I was closing in rapidly to Ilkka and was feeling pretty good about my chances of a p2 On lap 33 Ilkka was catching up to a backmarker going into Moss corner and I tried to brake as late as possible to have a shot on the next straight. The backmarker tried to let Ilkka pass/braked to late/whatever so that Ilkka had to brake very heavily to not to hit him. I braked as hard as I could but couldn't avoid hitting him in the rear. I was the lucky one and could continue with almost no damage at all and kept it together for a second place finish, not quite the result I was expecting after the quali and a bad first stint
Congrats to Greger, he must've been the only one who didn't go off during the race lol."
